Anxiety

Anxiety is a natural and often helpful emotional response to stress or perceived threats, playing a protective role in alerting us to danger. However, when anxiety becomes excessive, persistent, or out of proportion to the situation, it can interfere with daily functioning and become a clinical condition known as anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health conditions, affecting millions of people worldwide. Symptoms may include excessive worry, restlessness, difficulty concentrating, irritability, rapid heartbeat, sweating, and muscle tension. Common types of anxiety disorders include generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and specific phobias.

The causes of anxiety disorders are complex and often involve a combination of genetic, environmental, and psychological factors. A family history of anxiety or other mental health conditions may increase the risk of developing anxiety. Environmental stressors, such as trauma, chronic stress, or major life changes, can also trigger or worsen anxiety. In some cases, anxiety may be related to underlying medical conditions or substance abuse. The brain’s chemical balance, particularly neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, plays a role in regulating mood and anxiety, and imbalances in these chemicals can contribute to the development of anxiety disorders.

Because anxiety is such an unpleasant feeling, we often try to fight it or avoid it. However, this usually increases anxiety. In my approach, I believe the best way to treat anxiety is by embracing it. Anxiety may feel like your enemy but in fact is your brain’s way of trying to protect you. By exploring and understanding your anxiety rather than resisting it, you can find inner peace and happiness in your daily life. We will work together to find ways to respond differently to anxiety in order to decrease it.
